About Us

Community Works (CW) is a nonprofit arts organization founded in 1990 with the mission to forge links between diverse cultures and communities, to improve educational attainment, and to extend the benefits of the arts to all people. CW has grown from a small, grassroots organization to become one of the largest providers of quality arts, literacy and mentoring programs to schools and community groups around New York City. Our vision and values have been working to transform the lives of young people for the past eleven years, and we are a thriving presence in hundreds of schools and neighborhoods.

Working with the most diverse network of community-based artists and facilitators, CW annually serves more than 150,000 public school students and community groups in New York City.

Our work is built on a model of bringing together diverse people and offering a rich continuum of arts and educational experiences that includes:

  • Hands-on workshops in theatre, dance, music, creative writing and visual arts.
  • Public art exhibits that tell the vibrant stories of our local communities through photographs and text written by children.
  • Performances of music, dance and theatre events at multiple sites around the City.
