AMERICANS WHO TELL THE TRUTH

harlem is...

Community Works' Public Arts program creates multi-media exhibits from Making a Difference programs and other youth initiatives based on student writings and workshops, allowing young people to tell their own stories to the larger community. The Making A Difference program began nine years ago, working with one class in one school, honoring a handful of individuals who were making positive contributions to their communities. Since that time, the MAD program and its curriculum have been implemented in more than a dozen projects, with more than 1500 students participating and over 150 individuals being honored.

The major landmarks of this project have been the development of Community Works' model projects, The Long Walk to Freedom which honors sixteen unsung heroes of the civil rights movement, and harlem is... which celebrates the living history of Harlem honoring thirty of its remarkable community members, ages 50- 100, from all sectors of society. With the Long Walk to Freedom currently embarked on a national tour and harlem is... soon to follow, Community Works has begun to develop programs that are national in scope and interest. Through this and other initiatives, we hope to continue to bridge cultures through art and education, use the arts as a tool for social and personal transformation, and help share the rich community stories that are all around us everyday.

In the summer of 2005, we premiered Americans Who Tell the Truth which honors 36 American luminaries notable for their courage and relentless quest for truth.
