Latin Roots: Celebrating the Living History of New York City’s Latino Neighborhoods

The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs celebrates these exhibitions as part of Immigrant Heritage Week April 17 – April 23, 2009.

LATIN ROOTS: WASHINGTON HEIGHTS/INWOOD

Is a model intergenerational public art and education program that venerates Washington Heights’ and Inwood’s distinct cultural and historical importance. This living history program honors local heroes who have helped make Washington Heights’ and Inwood the community it is today.

Latin Roots: Washington Heights/Inwoodhonorees are:

  1. Moises Perez - Co-founder and Executive Director of Alianza Dominicana, the largest community development agency for Dominicans in New York and the U.S.
  2. Edilio Paredes – Pre-eminent Bachata musician.
  3. Rosita Romero – Executive Director of Dominican Women's Development Center and a champion of women’s rights in marginalized communities.

Exhibition dates & times: April 15, 2009 – June 11, 2009, 9am-9pm
Event Location: Hostos Center for Arts & Culture, 450 Grand Concourse at 149th Street, Bronx, New York

LATIN ROOTS: Jackson Heights/Corona

Is a model intergenerational public art and education program that venerates Jackson Heights and Corona’s distinct cultural and historical importance. This living history program honors four local heroes through the lens of young people and includes a first-ever pictorial timeline on the neighborhoods’ history over the past 100 years.

Latin Roots: Jackson Heights/Coronahonorees are:

  1. Ana Maria Archila – Executive Director of Latin American Integration Center
  2. Ana Lopez – Executive Director of the Father Billini Association
  3. Marcos Napa – Musician and teaching artist, Pachamama Peruvian Arts, a project of the Center for Traditional Music and Dance
  4. Orlando Tobon – community advocate and “honorary Mayor of Little Colombia”
